Mike Vrabel has found himself under intense scrutiny after photos of him with Dianna Russini surfaced publicly. What followed has quickly escalated into a messy situation, with ripple effects extending beyond just the two individuals involved. The New England Patriots have also been pulled into the spotlight. Russini stepped down from her role at The Athletic, while the Patriots have stood by their head coach, with the league opting not to pursue an investigation into what it considers a personal matter.
That, however, may only be the beginning. If things don’t stabilize heading into the 2026 season, the situation in and around the organization will only get worse. What was supposed to be a quiet post-draft ramp-up has turned into a stack of headlines. In an era where players are constantly plugged into social media, situations like this rarely stay contained. And as Robert Griffin III pointed out, distractions of this scale can easily seep into a locker room and impact the group as a whole.
Robert Griffin III Believes That the Mike Vrabel-Diana Russini Scandal Will Affect the Patriots’ 2026 Season
Fanbases don’t care. No one does. Not until the job’s done. Vrabel’s job is to build on the success of Year 1.
But on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” RG3 made it clear: this situation isn’t staying contained in the offseason. He strongly sees the repercussions derailing the Patriots’ Year 2 under Vrabel.
The former Cleveland Browns QB started by tipping his cap to Cowherd’s “Herd Hierarchy,” the post-draft pecking order of Super Bowl contenders. He said:
“I would say I agree with the list, and I also agree with the Patriots not being on the list. And it’s tough because you got a team that just went to the Super Bowl.”

But then, RG3 explained why he agreed to Cowherd’s list. And the main point he touched on was that the loss of trust in the leadership might come into play, given how things are unfolding, with the head coach at the center of a scandal.
“It’s really hard to stand in front of the room. I know nobody wants to talk about it, but with everything that’s happened with Vrabel and Dianna Russini, it’s really hard to stand in front of a room of those men and lead them in the same way. And we’ve heard some reports about Vrabel not necessarily being the same guy in the building, right?”
He concluded his point by saying, “I think that hurts them this year, and it’s unfortunate because I thought Vrabel was a big reason why they turned things around. Playing really suffocating defense and allowing Drake Maye not to have to always be Superman. I thought that allowed him to have an MVP season.”
If RG3’s warning proves accurate, it would be a tough blow for the New England Patriots. Just a year ago, there was a real sense that something was building, maybe not a full-blown dynasty yet, but at least the early framework of one.
Yes, it ended with a humbling loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 60. But even getting to Levi’s Stadium on February 8, 2026, wasn’t something many saw coming.

The numbers backed the foundation of that ‘run’. The Patriots’ offense finished No. 2 overall in PFSN’s NFL Offense Impact rankings, while the defense came in at No. 12 on the PFSN’s NFL DEFi. That’s real growth under Mike Vrabel. And now, an offseason controversy that refuses to fade is threatening to stall that momentum.
If this spirals into a disappointing season, an early playoff exit, or worse, missing the postseason entirely, the conversation will shift. It’s no longer ‘if’ Vrabel is under pressure. It becomes ‘when’ he is walking out of the building. And that puts everything back on the head coach to steady the room and deliver results.
Patriots Players Show Support for Vrabel
Despite the noise surrounding the situation, the Patriots’ players remain fully supportive of their head coach.
“We’re here for Coach, we love Coach,” Drake Maye said about Vrabel. “What he does for us, what he’s done for us this past year, you can’t speak into words. Thankful he’s our head coach. Know he’s dealing with some off the field and out of the coaching world, but we’re here for him, and I know he’s gonna come back.”
Apart from the star quarterback, two veterans, Hunter Henry and Robert Spillane, were also asked about Vrabel.
“I thought he did a great job. It’s been the same Vrabes, bringing a lot of that energy in the room. Obviously, he addressed it, and that’s kind of all I’ll say about it,” Henry said.
“Coach coaches football. He keeps the main thing the main thing. So I know he’s dealing with personal issues, but when we’re in the building, we speak football,” Spillane said. “I love coach, and I’m going to be there to support him as he would be there to support me through everything. I’m just a player, and I’m trying to do that as best I can.”
Vrabel has addressed the media twice since the scandal broke, acknowledging that he’s had “difficult” yet “positive and productive” conversations with his family and team.
