Amazon Essentials Winter Jacket Review: How Does the Budget-Friendly Piece Hold Up?

THIS WINTER HAS been one for the books. I can’t personally remember sub-zero temperatures of this magnitude in my neck of the woods. I needed a full arsenal of winter jackets to get me through it. On the bright side, it was the perfect environment to test out a few different winter jackets so that you fine folks didn’t have to.

At the peak of the cold spell, my Expedition Parka came in handy—it’s by far the warmest jacket I’ve ever owned. But a $1,600 parka isn’t always the most practical, especially if it’s a quick trip to the supermarket or when Mother Nature decides to spare us a little break.

Considering I already own a pricey winter jacket, I wanted to get something a little more cost-effective and suitable for the warmer(ish) weather. Amazon Essentials has never done me wrong, and their down winter jacket just happened to be on sale for less than $40—perhaps a sign.

But could a $80 jacket from Amazon really do the trick? I tested it out over a few particularly cold weeks; here are some of my findings.

First Impressions

Heavyweight Hooded Puffer Coat

Pros

  • Great weather resistance for its price point
  • Comfortable fleece lining
  • Relaxed fit for layering
  • Under $70

Cons

  • Not the most stylish jacket

Puffer jackets are generally timeless, and they’ve seemed to take on a new life in the past couple of years, so despite the jacket’s non-flashy branding, I figured it would be fashionable enough.

It’s a little heavier than a traditional puffer, so not quite as sleek. When taking it out of its packaging, though, I was pleasantly surprised: despite its heavyweight moniker, it was surprisingly lightweight. This is exactly what I was looking for; something a little more lightweight that’s suitable for the cold weather. The million-dollar question, though was its soft construction and lack of heft, could it adequately withstand fluctuating winter temperatures?

Warmth and Insulation

The Heavyweight Puffer certainly passed the comfort test. The fleece lining added an effective layer of warmth and coziness, already making it one of the more comfortable winter jackets I own. The insulated hood wasn’t too cumbersome, and I was able to put it up over my hat without impeding my sight (some hoods I’ve tested are far too baggy and don’t allow this extra layer of protection).

The Essentials Jacket also boasts an oversized fit, allowing for some extra layers if necessary. I actually ended up sizing down since I was looking for a quick one-layer jacket, but you can go in either direction. Despite sizing down, though, I was still able to wear some heavier winter apparel underneath without feeling too restricted.

When fully zipped with the hood up, it provides ample insulation. It features both snap-button and zipper closures, which, together, help maintain a certain level of warmth. The heat retention, as a result, was surprisingly solid, and when fully zipped, hood up, it provides a comfortable, yet roomy, cocoon-like protection from the elements.

Speaking of which, the outer shell is simple, yet effective, and is made from a durable polyester plain-weave shell. One thing to note: it’s water-resistant and not fully waterproof, which is fine for slightly inclement weather, but not necessarily a full-on winter storm, so plan accordingly.

Final Thoughts on the Amazon Essentials Puffer Coat

All things considered, the Amazon Essentials puffer exceeded my expectations. It’s certainly not the most stylish jacket I own, but it’s great for what it is, and it’s the perfect mid-sized winter jacket that gets the job done without a ton of bulk. The insulation stacks up well with other much higher-priced jackets I own, and I never felt like I needed to add another layer in sub-freezing temperatures.

I’m typically wary of sub-$100 winter jackets, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one’s insulation and heat-retention capabilities. While I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it as a primary winter coat for harsher climates, it’s a great supplementary piece, and it’s certainly durable enough for everyday use in warmer winter temperatures without a ton of precipitation. And at this price point, you’d be hard-pressed to find an option that gets the job done as effectively. Amazon for the win once again.
