Lily Collins has an answer to the holiday season’s most persistent fashion question: What coat are we wearing over our formal dresses this year? Especially if we don’t want to be too predictable. A short puffer coat is probably out, but what about a short pea coat? If we’re going long, well, how long should a long dress coat be, anyway?
If you ask Collins, a borrowed-from-the-boys black wool overcoat is just the ticket. Think of it as a winterized version of Hailey Bieber’s favorite oversized leather jackets. Even if it doesn’t look as though Collins literally borrowed her coat from the boys, the broad shoulders and structured fit still provide a particularly nice contrast with her especially girly minidress.

Lily Collins was photographed in New York City on December 9 with a crisp black wool coat over her shoulders so it wouldn’t obscure the dress. The dress, by the way, is a strapless sequined mini, further adorned with a cheeky peplum. Collins wore the dress over mostly sheer black tights and added a pair of ankle-strap black pumps. Miraculously, she didn’t even look cold.

Obviously, the crisp black overcoat is not the only option for formal winter outerwear this season. The faux fur, for instance, is once again having its moment, and it is surprisingly easy to style. We’ve also seen some incredibly chic leather coats for winter, as well as slightly more classic trench coats.

Just this week, while on her Emily in Paris press tour, Collins has been seen in several of our favorite winter coat styles.

That said, the classic black wool coat does have at least one major advantage over all the rest. And that is the fact that it will remain classic for decades to come (probably), so it will never look inappropriate. And if you think it can’t be trendy, just look at Collins.
