There’s a lot going on in the world. The fact that beer is not welcome at the World Cup is the least of the tournament’s issues this year. The fall of FTX has forced us to become crypto finance experts in less than a week. Maybe this is just a me thing, but The Crown is a little humdrum this season. Elon Musk is raising an army that will go toe-to-toe with Nick Cannon’s forces in 2042, and all we can do is panic. Musk is throwing the lives of communications majors in turmoil, causing ripples of panic. Musk is not on Mars, and I’m panicking! But, amid everything, I did want to make sure this crossed your desk:
Did you see it? Did you see that Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck posted a new video? It’s the first of its kind on Lopez’s TikTok. In it, Lopez is smiling and then Affleck chews his gum. They’re cuddling. A small British-sounding person narrates, “Girls, I did it! I’ve found the person that makes me the happiest I have ever been.”
The video is sweet, no? It’s a nice thing amid all this other stuff out there, right? These two dated, then got engaged, then broke up, then 20 years passed and they did it all over again. The second time they added a wedding and a familymoon and another wedding and then a proper honeymoon. Paparazzi followed them. Tabloid headlines yelled about everywhere they went, from Las Vegas to France to Georgia (the state) to Italy. And then, after all that, they kind of settled into a rhythm. We didn’t hear as much, comparatively, from them. But here they are, still happy! Still thriving! Still making some content and this time on their own terms!
Now, I’m seeing some feedback that this video is “weird” and “uncomfortable.” I get it. I can see that. They’re looking right at the camera while doing a public display of contentment, which feels a little like two people looking right into your soul. But I guess instead of asking, Why did they post this odd video, I would ask, Why does the celebrity gaze make you squirm? Can’t handle Lopez and Affleck looking you directly in the eye? What do you need to do to get right with yourself? There’s a lot going on in the world and in your life, but what do you need to do in order to have Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez look right at you, while they hold each other and a baby’s voice speaks of happiness, and feel only that it’s “cute”? That’s just a little food for thought this Monday.
