It rained on Julie and Marie Skall’s fashion parade but not a drop of the collection’s prettiness was washed away. And truth be told water was on theme; this outing was called La Piscine in reference to the French museum the sister designers had visited, but which is a title that will, for most, bring to mind the 1969 movie in which Jane Birkin co-starred. In fact, the Anglo-French actress is a carryover muse from Skall Studio’s 2027 resort collection. The vintage baskets the models carried could be read as a kind of homage to the rattan basket that Birkin toted long before she had an Hermès carryall named after her.
Spring at Skall Studios is usually a bohemian bonanza, and that was the case again this season. “The overall look is quite relaxed, still very feminine,” noted Marie, “just many long, loose, airy silhouettes.” A lot of references went further back than hippiedom, however. Charms that hung from waistbands of light-washed denim jeans resembled 19th-century chatelaines; a wide-sleeved white jacket with ruffled edges recalled a paletot from that era as well.
The sisters’ stated reference point was the south of France, yet the clothes recalled places much closer to home. The Skall sisters are from Northern Jutland, where the Skagen School of painters captured the special light of the region. The romanticism and rural aspects of the fashions depicted in these artists’ work were also present in the collection, but updated to allow a practical barn jacket to share space with pastel Liberty prints and smocked nightgown-style dresses to mingle with striped tailored pieces in crisp linen. “I think you will see this is a very Skall show—more so than we have ever made,” noted Marie. She was correct.
