Is there anything more exciting than watching someone enter their fashion era? The latest butterfly to emerge from their cocoon is Eddie Redmayne. The 40-year-old actor wore an ornate, sequined sheer top to the GQ Men of the Year awards ceremony, which was held in Berlin on Thursday. The see-through Gucci resort 2023 look is not for the faint of heart, but the mixture of exposed skin and sequins provided a fabulously bold and eye-catching statement.
The outfit is the latest knockout moment from Redmayne. Since partnering with in-demand stylist Harry Lambert (whose clientele roster also includes Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, and Josh O’Connor) Redmayne’s style has undeniably leveled up. In previous years, Redmayne could be relied on for an expertly tailored suit moment. This fall, however, the star has transitioned to funkier and more casual looks, such as a fuzzy sweater from Marni paired with dramatic wide-leg trousers. Redmayne’s sheer moment feels like an official declaration: he’s a fashion kid now.
These days, it seems that male actors are becoming more comfortable with showing skin on the red carpet. Timothée Chalamet, a vanguard of menswear, hit the Oscars carpet wearing a blazer sans shirt underneath at the start of the year. And then he decided to show off his back too, via a Haider Ackermann halter at the Venice Film Festival. Jerrod Carmichael went shirtless on the Emmys red carpet this year, donning a large fur. And Elite actor Manu Ríos hit the Met Gala red carpet wearing a peek-a-boo lace suit designed by Moschino.
As more and more unlikely players join the fashion trenches, menswear is likely to grow only more bold, and racy, in the upcoming year. We’ll be watching closely.
