Kirov, reporting
- Command & Conquer: Legion was the latest game to be showcased at Gamescom
- Another cinematic trailer, there’s nothing of actual gameplay, but some sky-high production values
- Still, fans will see a lot that’s both good and bad in this new trailer
Second verse, same as the first, Gamescom 2024 is still going strong and we’ve still got lots more to report on! This time it’s another Level Infinite game, with Command & Conquer: Legions, the mobile spin-off of the classic RTS franchise. Unfortunately, this time we don’t have much in the way of behind-the-scenes footage, but we do have a new cinematic trailer.
It’s got all the Command & Conquer mainstays from Red Alert, including the Psychic Dominator, Apocalypse Tank and the Kirovs. But in terms of actual aesthetics, it does feel a bit less cartoony than even games like Red Alert 2, and speaking of, fans will probably be upset that Natalya rather than good ol’ Boris is set to be the hero for the Soviet faction.
In terms of gameplay? Nothing doing, but it does show off the sky-high production values Level Infinite seem to be putting into their new crop of RTS. But whether or not that matters for Command & Conquer fans depends on how the game actually plays when it comes out.
In name only
I’m not so sure about the wisdom of making RTS spin-off mobile games. You have to remember that RTS fans like the peculiarities of the genre. There’s a reason Feral Interactive’s ports of the Total War series are still well-loved while Total War Elysium faded into the background. The same could be said of Command & Conquer: Legions, it seems, but maybe it’ll be alright on the night? We’ll have to wait and see.
