Ranma ½ is an anime classic that first aired back in 1989. It is based on the Japanese manga of the same name written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi, a famed author. It was recently announced that Ranma 1/2 will get a reboot, with fresh colors and art, to appeal to the current fan base.
Although a little ahead of its times, the original anime still garnered massive attention and fandom when it aired in many countries worldwide (In collaboration with stations like Animax and Cartoon Network). So when is the Ranma 1/2 dropping? Where to watch? And will it be good enough?
1. When is the Ranma 1/2 remake releasing, and where to watch it?
The Ranma 1/2 remake is slated for a release on October 5 2024. It will have weekly releases and exclusively aired on Netflix outside Japan. The remake is around three decades after the original finished airing.
Netflix has once again captured the hearts of otakus worldwide with its decision to air the remake worldwide. Nostalgia and excitement fill the turbulent hearts of anime veterans as they eagerly await the release date.
The episodes will be aired in a weekly manner on Netflix, starting from October 5th. The weekly release schedule was announced by Netflix, along with a trailer to give us a glimpse of the new art (English-subbed). I will attach it for you to admire as well.
With Studio MAPPA at the helm of this remake, the quality is all but assured. Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura also got a reboot (completed), and the Ranma remake was announced shortly after it finished airing.
2. Why should you watch Ranma 1/2?
There are a boatload of reasons to watch Ranma 1/2. Being a classic that boasted massive popularity even decades after it finished airing, one cannot claim to be an anime expert if they haven’t watched this masterpiece.
The work is based on the manga with the same name. This is the genius creation of Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of wonders for almost 40 years. You may not have heard of her, but you will definitely recognize her through her works.
She is the creator of Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Mermaid Saga, and the legendary Inuyasha. She won the prestigious Shogakukan Award twice. If the anime sticks to her original work, even after more than 30 years, the jokes will still get the same laughs. And you can feel the emotions deeply.
The original anime did good work bringing out the essence of Rumiko’s manga. If the new reboot is even half as good, it will be a blast among the new generation anime lovers. If you like comedy, romance, and action with a pinch of confusion and many misunderstandings, Ranma 1/2 will not disappoint you.

3. What is Ranma ½ about?
Ranma ½ is a slapstick rom-com anime with mixed action and fantastical elements. The genre is hugely part of the ‘misunderstanding comedy’ that has recently seen a rise.
The story is about Ranma Saotome, learning martial arts from his father, Genma. They train in a forbidden land with many water springs in China, slipping and falling into them. They realize that they have been physically transformed after hitting the water.
Ranma turns into a young girl, and his father becomes a Panda. They find out that the way to reverse this is by using hot water. They will, however, turn back into their cursed forms if they come in physical contact with normal or cold water.
Akane Tendo of the Tendo Dojo was betrothed to Ranma, and our story starts with Ranma living with Akane after returning to Japan. The misunderstandings with many characters and how Ranma navigates his teens alongside his weird powers make for a delightful watch.
